This weekend was absolutely wonderful. The weather was perfect - in my opinion. Mid-70s and no humidity - perfect. We did house chores Saturday morning then packed up the kayaks and a quick lunch and headed to a local state park - Gifford Pinchot State Park - to the lake. The lake is fairly large and this was our first time kayaking there. We put in and started exploring the shoreline and several coves.
My view for the day pretty much looked like this.
Spring has definitely sprung in south central PA. Everything is greening up and the trees are beginning to bloom. The water was pretty murky in places but at times was like glass. And the reflections in the water were wonderful.
We paddled for about 2 1/2 hours - stopping to float a bit for a snack of cheese and fruit. Then we headed back to the boat landing. But as we neared it we looked off to the right and saw another section of the lake. We decided it was too nice to leave and headed off in that direction. It lead to a creek that is one of the tributaries of the lake. We only went up the creek a little bit as we were getting tired. It will definitely be a place we explore in the next few weeks. We met up with another couple who said in a month or so the water in the creek will be much more shallow making it hard to navigate. In total we were on the water about 3 1/2 hours. We saw tons of birds - including a huge heron, about 100 turtles, fish, a large goose sitting on a it's nest giving us the stink eye as we paddled by. We steered clear as geese can be nasty. A really good workout while still enjoying ourselves.
The lake was fairly busy - with lots of people fishing, campers and others who were kayaking and canoeing. It is nice that no motorized boats are allowed on the lake - making it fairly calm for kayaking. and since it is only about 30 minutes from our house I am sure we will be there more often.
The rest of the weekend meant - dinner on the deck, sitting around our new firepit, casting on some new projects - very baby heavy, coffee with my knitting group on Sunday, cooking for the week, planning for next weekend's camping trip, and relaxing.
A nearly perfect weekend.
